about
It’s impossible to overstate how important Lanegan was to me as a singer/songwriter. I loved him in Screaming Trees, but his solo albums really put the hook in me. Dark, moody songs: sad, even the ones in major keys. All delivered with that whiskey-soaked and cigarette-sanded Old Testament voice, a voice that ranks up there with Johnny Cash’s and Muddy Waters’ in the Authority Department. His autobiography, Sing Backwards And Weep, is a harrowing account of his life and career that leaves you with no doubt that he lived his songs, and then some.
In the early 90s, when I was just starting to write and perform my own songs, Lanegan showed me that I could be a baritone in a world of tenors. He’s easily in my Top 5 List of favorite vocalists, and I owe him a debt of gratitude for his influence and beautiful, sprawling body of work. If you ain’t hip, check out Bubblegum, Whiskey For The Holy Ghost, I’ll Take Care Of You (his first covers album), and his debut solo record, The Winding Sheet. Screaming Trees’ catalog, especially Sweet Oblivion and Dust, is fantastic, as are his contributions to the Queens Of The Stone Age albums, his duet album with Isobel Campbell, Gutter Twins, Soul Savers…you get the idea. If you’re new to him, I envy you for the journey ahead.
Shortly after his passing, I wrote this song, leaning in hard to his vibe and aesthetic. This was originally just a GarageBand demo but, with the first anniversary of his death approaching, I thought it would be appropriate to clean the track up in Logic to the best of my "still learning" abilities. Hope you enjoy this tribute, friends.
lyrics
You tried to go for the dopamine hit
Had to settle for a cigarette
These days the kicks are gettin’ fewer and farther between
Used to come in such a decadent rush
All the noises pretty flashes and such
But now you’re crouchin’ in the ashes with the rest of the libertines
Someone turn the light off
Someone I can trust
I been floatin’ in the window
Dancin’ with the dust
And through it all
Different kinds of poison all go down the same way
There’s a party at the gallows
But you’re swingin’ alone
And through it all
Different kinds of poison all go down the same way
There’s a party at the gallows
But you’re swingin’ alone
Casanova with a Cheshire Cat grin
Knows the trouble you’ve been gettin’ in
He’s been preachin’ on the corner throwin’ candy to the kids in the street
It’s an easy way to gather recruits
Dress ‘em up in silver skeleton suits
And send ‘em out into the jungle spreading venom to the orphans they meet
Someone turn the light off
Someone I can trust
I been floatin’ in the window
Dancin’ with the dust
I been floatin’ in the window
Dancin’ with the dust

Written, performed, produced, mixed, and mastered by Tod Weidner, at home, on GarageBand. Cleaned up and remixed (to an extent) in Logic Pro.
One of those singer/songwriter types your mama warned you about, Tod Weidner has embarked upon a long awaited solo career
after decades as a fixture on the Ohio music scene. Tod founded and led Dayton mainstays Shrug and was a member of Motel Beds and many other notable groups, to boot. He serves up songs with the ragged, passionate musical heart of a rocker and the wordsmithery of a Beat poet....more
